A GeoLite2 alternative with no database to keep updated
MaxMind's GeoLite2 is a free IP geolocation database that you download, host, and keep updated yourself, under MaxMind's GeoLite license. Its free web service allows 1,000 lookups a day. Mapricot's IP geolocation is an API: send an IP address and get its country, region, and city, with 250,000 free requests every 30 days, shared with geocoding and routing, then $0.10 per 1,000.
Equivalent APIs
Each Mapricot API next to the MaxMind product that does the same job. Mapricot's API isn't compatible with any other provider's, so switching means changing requests and response handling.

When to choose each
Where Mapricot is stronger
- No database to download, host, or replace. GeoLite's license requires using each new release, and deleting old ones within 30 days.
- 250,000 free lookups every 30 days, where GeoLite's web service allows 1,000 a day.
- Geocoding, places, routing, and free map tiles under the same key.
- Data from DB-IP under CC BY 4.0, with the credit to show named in every response.
Where MaxMind is stronger
- Lookups inside your own app, with no network call or cost for each lookup once the database is downloaded.
- Postal codes, time zones, ASNs, and an accuracy radius in results.
- Paid GeoIP data and services, including ISP, connection type, and anonymizer detection.
MaxMind pricing
GeoLite2 databases and web services are free with a MaxMind account, limited to 1,000 web service lookups a day for each service and 30 database downloads a day. MaxMind's paid GeoIP web services cost $0.10 per 1,000 lookups for Country, $0.30 for City Plus, and $2.00 for Insights, bought as prepaid credit from $20.
IP geolocation
GeoLite's limits are from MaxMind's GeoLite page. Source: MaxMind's web service pricing, last checked October 23, 2026. Mapricot charges $0.10 per 1,000 requests after 250,000 free every 30 days, shared by every API, and its map tiles are free with no key.
Differences to plan for
- Lookups: GeoLite2 is a database file you read with MaxMind's libraries. Mapricot is one request,
GET /v1/ip/{ip}, with the key in anAuthorization: Bearerheader, so there's nothing to install or update. - Results: Mapricot returns the continent, country, region, city, and coordinates, and
"found": falsewhen it has no location for the address. See IP geolocation. - Accuracy: IP geolocation is approximate from every provider. Use it for a country or city, not a street address. MaxMind says GeoLite City is less accurate than its paid GeoIP City data.
- Credits: GeoLite requires crediting MaxMind in your product. Mapricot's responses name their source, DB-IP, and its license, so you can show the credit.
