A MapTiler alternative with free map tiles and routing
MapTiler Cloud sells hosted maps, geocoding, and other map APIs in monthly plans: a Free plan for non-commercial use, and Flex at $30 a month, with map sessions and API requests counted separately. Mapricot's map tiles are free, and its geocoding, places, routing, and IP geolocation cost $0.10 per 1,000 requests after 250,000 free every 30 days, commercial use included.
Equivalent APIs
Each Mapricot API next to the MapTiler product that does the same job. Mapricot's API isn't compatible with any other provider's, so switching means changing requests and response handling.

When to choose each
Where Mapricot is stronger
- Free requests you can use commercially. MapTiler's Free plan is for non-commercial use, testing, and prototypes.
- Map tiles that are free at any volume. MapTiler counts map sessions, at $2.50 per 1,000 past the Flex plan's 25,000, or each tile as a request with other map libraries.
- Routing through up to 20 stops, and nearby places by category. MapTiler has neither.
- IP lookups for any address, from your server. MapTiler's Geolocation API locates only the IP that calls it.
Where MapTiler is stronger
- More map styles, satellite imagery, 3D terrain, and a designer for custom styles.
- Batch geocoding of up to 50 queries in one request.
- Hosting for your own map data, plus static maps, elevation, and coordinate transformation APIs.
MapTiler pricing
MapTiler Cloud's Free plan, for non-commercial use, gives 5,000 map sessions, 1,000 search sessions, and 100,000 API requests a month, and pauses when they're used up. Flex costs $30 a month for 25,000 map sessions, 3,000 search sessions, and 500,000 API requests, then $2.50 per 1,000 sessions and $0.15 per 1,000 requests. Larger volumes are custom contracts.

Prices exclude VAT. A map session starts when someone opens a page with a map made with MapTiler's SDK, and lasts up to 6 hours or 10,000 requests. With other map libraries, each tile counts as an API request. Source: MapTiler pricing, last checked October 23, 2026. Mapricot charges $0.10 per 1,000 requests after 250,000 free every 30 days, shared by every API, and its map tiles are free with no key.
Differences to plan for
- Requests: MapTiler's geocoding puts the query in the path, as
/geocoding/{query}.json, and the key in the URL askey. Mapricot's takes the query asq, and the key in anAuthorization: Bearerheader. - Results: MapTiler returns GeoJSON features, with
centeras[longitude, latitude]. Mapricot returnslatandlonon each result, and the address in parts underaddress. - Maps: Both serve vector tiles and styles for MapLibre. Mapricot's tiles use the Protomaps schema, so a custom style written for MapTiler's tiles won't draw them without changes.
- Storing results: MapTiler's terms let you use geocoding results outside its service, with attribution. Mapricot's results are built on open data, and you can keep them permanently.
