An OpenFreeMap alternative with geocoding and routing
OpenFreeMap serves free OpenStreetMap vector tiles and styles for MapLibre, with no key, no registration, and no limit on requests, funded by donations. Mapricot's map tiles are free with no key too, and the same account adds geocoding, places, routing, and IP geolocation, at $0.10 per 1,000 requests after 250,000 free every 30 days.
Equivalent APIs
Each Mapricot API next to the OpenFreeMap product that does the same job. Mapricot's API isn't compatible with any other provider's, so switching means changing requests and response handling.

When to choose each
Where Mapricot is stronger
- Geocoding, address autocomplete, nearby places, routing, and IP geolocation, to search and route on the map you show.
- A paid service with email support, answered within one business day. OpenFreeMap offers no SLA or personal support.
- Search results with coordinates and a credit for each source, ready to draw on the same tiles.
Where OpenFreeMap is stronger
- More styles, including Liberty, Bright, Positron, Fiord, and a 3D style.
- The OpenMapTiles schema, which many existing styles are built for. Mapricot's tiles use the Protomaps schema.
- Weekly planet downloads for running your own tile server, and offline downloads of up to 3,000 tiles.
OpenFreeMap pricing
OpenFreeMap's public instance is free, with no limit on map views or requests and no API key or registration. Commercial use is allowed with the OpenStreetMap credit shown. It's funded by donations and support plans, and doesn't offer an SLA. It serves map tiles only.
Map display
Source: OpenFreeMap's terms, last checked October 22, 2026. Mapricot charges $0.10 per 1,000 requests after 250,000 free every 30 days, shared by every API, and its map tiles are free with no key.
Differences to plan for
- Styles: OpenFreeMap's style URLs look like
https://tiles.openfreemap.org/styles/liberty. Mapricot's look likehttps://tiles.mapricot.com/styles/light.json, inlight, dark, andgrayscale. Either goes straight into MapLibre'sstyleoption. - Schema: The two use different vector tile schemas, OpenMapTiles and Protomaps, so a custom style written for one won't draw the other's tiles without changes.
- Limits: Mapricot's tiles allow about 1,200 tile requests a minute from each IP address, plenty for people browsing a map. They're meant for maps in apps and websites, not bulk downloads.
- Search and routing: OpenFreeMap has no search or routing APIs, so a map built on it needs another provider for those. With Mapricot they come from the same account as the tiles.
